The valorization of endogenous energy resources, with particular emphasis on Europe and North America, especially those of a renewable nature, is one of the main objectives of Portuguese energy policy with the aim of minimizing energy dependence and reducing the emission of pollutants. In Portugal, a significant amount of forest biomass is already used for energy purposes, mainly in the pulp, panel and agglomerate industries and in the production of densified biomass for energy purposes (briquettes and pellets). The problem proposed in this research is to define these supply chains, particularly with regard to logistical issues and cost analysis, from the collection of biomass to processing and/or the end user, with greater emphasis on the analysis of logistical strategies in the biomass production sector in Portugal, particularly in the production of pellets and the analysis of logistical strategies associated with potential consumers, thus providing knowledge about a sector that has not yet reached its peak of development.
