The plastic representation of the myth of “Adam and Eve” in France

Iman Hachicha

In this book, my interest was in the lived history of women in the West at the beginning of the twentieth century and in France in particular. I studied the feminist commitments in the artistic and social milieu that have as their object the emancipation of women, through the interpretations of the plastic works representing the biblical myth of Genesis "of Adam and Eve" in different periods and with varied pictorial treatments. Thus, the artists' struggle for feminist emancipation, the right to equality, as well as the attack on patriarchal authority through artistic productions was examined according to its historical context. I have associated in my analysis "The Primitive Eve" with Paul Gauguin, "The Modern Eve" to Tamara de Lempicka, "The Loving Eve" to Marc Chagall, "The Free Eve" to Niki de Saint Phalle, and "The Cyborgian Eve" of the twenty-first century to the age of the machine and technology.
