In the 21st century, climate change is the main environmental issue facing most countries. Some locations suffer more from the consequences of climate change, either because of their geographical position or because of their economic vulnerability. In this sense, tropical forests play an important role, as in addition to providing various environmental services, they help to store CO2, thereby minimising the effects of its release into the atmosphere. However, this type of ecosystem is mainly located in developing countries, which means that these natural spaces are under constant anthropogenic pressure, ranging from the expansion of the agricultural frontier to the process of urbanisation, such as the Atlantic Rainforest in Pernambuco. Aiming to reconcile the protection of native vegetation and the minimisation of actions that contribute to the greenhouse effect, the instrument called Reducing Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) has emerged on the international scene.
