Como precaucion, escondio una carta que nombraba al sucesor en caso de que no se llegara a un acuerdo. Despues de su muerte, la corte real decidio ver la carta de Qaboos y nombro a su pretendido sucesor, su primo Haitham bin Tariq, como Sultan.
