A profound respect for freedom and human integrity, as well as the claim for tolerance fill these pages in which Roberto Ampuero and Mauricio Rojas talk about their political evolution from Marxism in the 60s to the liberal ideas that they profess today. Both Ampuero and Rojas dreamt of the communist revolution during Chile’s times of Salvador Allende and the Popular Unity alliance. Both went into exile after the Military Coup in 1973 which is where they became disheartened with the utopia for which they had fought. They saw up close the realities of socialism, be it totalitarian or social democracy, and they did not like it.

Their faraway travels not only changed their ideals, but also changed them as persons; they were able to see Chile with clearer eyes. In this work they remember their past and the mistakes of radicalism, and invite us to learn from history in order to regain the deep sense of civic duties that democracy is based on. In it, the authors also analyze the complicated present of Chilean Dialogo de conversos A Dialog between Two Converts society today, they warn about the risks of domestic political polarization and propose a more promising future for Chile.
