Aleksandr Nikolaevich Engelgardt chemist, writer and public figure of 60 to 70-ies of the XIX century, the general public is known mainly as the author of letters from the village. It is in fact a detailed letter, the first of which was sent in 1872 in Notes of the Fatherland of the family estate Engelhardt village Batishcheva Dorogobuzh district of Smolensk region. And then ten years readers of OZ is expected to publish another letter. Twelfth letter was published already in the Journal of Europe
Notes of the Fatherland was closed. Letters were once published a book, read Lenin and Marx, so that From the village and reprinted after 1917.
