Apres avoir termine ses etudes de droit a Berlin, Jean Oberle retourne ches les siens, a Alsheim. Dans cette Alsace annexee a l'Empire allemand, a la fin du XIXeme siecle, son pere Joseph est a la tete d'une scierie prospere. Jean s'est fixe pour but de lui succeder. Il retrouve une famille dechiree: son pere et sa soeur Lucienne font tout pour acquerir, ou en tout cas accepter, l'esprit allemand, que Jean, sa mere et son grand-pere Philippe, le patriarche impotent, ancien depute protestataire, rejettent farouchement… Tous les elements du drame sont donc en place, et Jean en sera la figure centrale.
