Ce roman commence en janvier 1922. Le narrateur apprend qu'un celebre juriste allemand, Siegfried von Kleist, est en realite l'un de ses amis, l'ecrivain Forestier. Pendant la guerre, une blessure a rendu Forestier amnesique. Forestier a ete recueilli et a poursuivi sa vie sous un nom tout different.

Le narrateur part donc pour Munich, ou il peut identifier Forestier avec l'aide du baron Zelten. Toutefois, ce voyage le replonge dans ses souvenirs d'etudiant, et plusieurs autres aventures arrivent. Le narrateur traverse l'Allemagne revancharde d'apres la Premiere guerre mondiale. Finalement, le narrateur rentre dans le Limousin, sa region natale, en compagnie de Forestier, ou ils comptent vivre une vie paisible.
