Seine einzige Ablenkung ist eine Sammlung beruhmter Schachpartien, die er wieder und wieder im Geiste nachspielt. Eine Obsession beginnt, die einige Jahre spater erneut auf einer Schiffsreise zutage kommt, wo Dr. B. auf den amtierenden Schachweltmeister Czentovic trifft.
