English description: In 1071 bishop Gundekar II. of Eichstatt (1057-1075) started the Gundekarianum as a pontificale. His successors kept on using this book for six centuries like a chronicle.Apart from being on the largest collections of prayers, ordinations, masses, excommunications, etc. that has come to us from this time, the Gundekarianum contains several miniatures which date from 1072 to 1517. These are mostly the images of the bishops of Eichstatt but also pictures of saints and richly ornamented initials. These pictures make the codex an unique source not only for historians but as well for art historians. German description: 1071 von dem Eichstatter Bischof Gundekar II. (1057 bis 1075) als Pontifikale begonnen, wurde das Gundekarianum sechs Jahrhunderte lang von seinen Nachfolgern genutzt und erganzt. Es ist die umfangreichste mittelalterliche Zusammenstellung dieser Art und fur die Liturgiegeschichte von hochstem Wert. Am Anfang steht ein Bildteil, der u.a. Miniaturen Christi, Heiliger und aller 18 Eichstatter Bischofe inklusive Gundekar enthalt. Diese Reihe wurde im Laufe der Zeit fortgesetzt und enthalt ab 1300 auch Einzelportrats der Bischofe und ihre Vita. Zu den Illustrationen - die letzte entstand 1517 - zahlen 29 Deckfarben-Miniaturen sowie grosse und kleine goldgeschmuckte Initialen. Sie zeigen die Entwicklung der Buchmalerei geradezu lehrbuchhaft auf und geben dem Codex den Rang einer singularen historischen, aber auch kunstgeschichtlichen Quelle.
