The USA are regarded as the leading sporting nation. But what do we really know about the American sport besides the fact that Baseball, American Football and Cheerleading originate there? What is meant by terms such as Athletics, Intercollegiate Sports, Intramural Sports, Title IX, Physical Education or the Y ? So far, there has been only little German language literature about the American sport, its structures and characteristic forms. This book is making a first try to close this gap. The individual contributions, which have been written by well-known American and German researchers on sport sciences, show that sport in America has a completely different structure than German sport with its clubs and societies.
