In seiner Seelenlehre beschreibt Mailander die seelischen Vorgange in der Mystik in nuchterner Selbstbeobachtung mit poetischer Sprache. Fur Mailanders Formenlehre gibt es Vorbilder bei Jakob Boehme. In dessen Emblematik findet man ahnliche Gedankengange. Die Schriften von Jakob Boehme und Paracelsus als Vorbilder fur Mailander zu bezeichnen, scheint konstruiert zu sein. Aber es ist nachgewiesen, dass die Schriften der Boehme - Schuler John Pordage und Jane Leade im schwabischen Pietismus hoch geschatzt und auch im Hauskreis von Mailander vorgelesen und kommentiert wurden.
