Ernest Shakletons legendare Nimrod-Exepedition verbrachte den Winter 1908 im Mc-Murdo-Sund, 32 Kilometer noerdlich der Discovery-Winterquartiere. Im Herbst bestieg eine Truppe den Mount Erebus und nahm Vermessungen seiner verschiedenen Krater vor. Im antarktischen Fruh-ling und Sommer 1908 bis 1909 verliessen drei Schlittenexpeditionen die Winterquartiere. Die erste drang nach Suden vor und erreichte die sudlichste Breite, welche jemals Menschenfuss be-treten hat; die zweite erreichte zum ersten Male den magnetischen Pol, und eine dritte nahm die Vermessungen der westlich vom Mc-Murdo-Sund gelegenen Hoehenzuge vor.
