Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts unternahm der oesterreichische Orientalist Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall den Versuch, das heilige Buch des Islam, den Koran, in einer poetischen UEbersetzung interessierten Fachkreisen zuganglich zu machen. In Lauf mehrerer Jahre ubertrug er so ungefahr ein Drittel des Korans aus dem Arabischen in eine wohlklingende dichterische Form.
