In den Jahren 1815/16 brach in einer Stadt in Apulien namens Noja (heute: Noicattaro) die Pest aus. Trotz uberaus energischer Massnahmen liess sie sich nur unter grossen Muhen und Opfern eindammen. 921 Personen wurden von der Pest ergriffen, von denen 728 starben.
