Gottfried Keller schrieb mit dem Grunen Heinrich einen der bedeutsamsten Bildungsromane der deutschen Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die vier Bucher des autobiographischen Werkes erschienen in einer ersten Fassung bereits 1854 und 1855. Da Gottfried Keller mit dieser ersten Fassung aber nie so recht gluckliche war, uberarbeitete er das Werk und veroeffentlichte 1879 eine zweite Fassung des Romans.
