Franz Kafka schrieb den Roman Das Schloss 1922, vollendete ihn aber zunachst nicht. Das Buch erschien posthum 1926. Ein Dorf, unterhalb eines Schlosses ohne nahere geografische Bestimmung liegt, von wo aus es beherrscht wird. Ein Fremder namens K folgt einer angeblichen Einladung aus dem Schloss und reist von weither an, um als Landvermesser zu arbeiten, doch alle Versuche, mit der Schlossbehoerde in Kontakt zu kommen, scheitern. Allmahlich beginnt K., sich wie die anderen Dorfbewohner der undurchsichtigen Macht des Schlosses zu beugen.
