Das Heptamerone wurde von Koenigin Margarete von Navarra nach dem Vorbild des Decamerone von Giovanni Boccacio als Rahmenerzahlung gestaltet, die an 10 Tagen erzahlt werden sollten. Von den geplanten 100 Novellen konnte die Koenigin 72 kurze Erzahlungen fertigstellen. Das Heptamerone wurde lange aufgrund der teilweise doch recht derben Geschichten als sittenloses Machwerk abgetan. Heute zahlen die Novellen als Zeitbild von hoher literarischer Qualitat zur Weltliteratur.
