Im Oktober 1787 lernte Goethe auf seiner Italienreise in Castel Gandolfo die schoene Mailanderin Maddalena Riggi kennen. Es entstand, bei Spiel und Englischlernen, eine wechselseitige Gewogenheit . Maddalena war versprochen. Das Geschwatz machte Runde. Zwei Monate spater loeste der Brautigam die Verlobung, und Maddalena wurde schwer krank. Im Februar 1788 begegnete Goethe ihr zufallig in der Kutsche Angelica Kauffmanns im roemischen Karneval. Vor seiner Ruckkehr nach Deutschland kam es noch einmal zu einer Begegnung. Eine Novelle um spontanes Aufflammen einer Liebesbeziehung, deren Zerstoerung und einen Abschied zweier Menschen, die sich noch nahestanden.
