Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has undeniably led to the worst worldwide healthcare outbreak of the twenty-first century. Our understanding of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2 virus), the agent that causes COVID-19, has dramatically improved over the past several years. Currently, healthcare systems are facing another COVID-19 outbreak in the form of long COVID or post-COVID-19 syndrome-that is, the development and presence of long-lasting symptoms after an acute SARs-CoV-2 infection.
