The Austrian Music Lexicon being compiled by the Commission for Music Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences is a reference work planned to cover the entire spectrum of Austrian music. In keywords referring to persons, places and subjects, it contains all the basic information needed for both research as well as practical use. In addition to terms that are self-evident (all major and minor composers, performers, ensembles, concert series, geographical districts, subject headings, etc.), Volume 5 again includes general summaries (from Serbia and South Tirol to Tirol and Zillertal, from Seckau and Seitenstetten to Steyr and Zwettl), and in addition to the expected (from Serenade to Show to Volkstanz [Folk Dance] or Zink) also much that is unexpected (such as Spiel [Playing], Subkulturen [Sub-cultures], Werkverzeichnis [index of a composer’s works]), has become forgotten (Schwerttanz [Sword Dance]), and is unusual (Tombeau, Totentanz [Death Dance], Videokunst [Video Art] or Zitat [Quotation]). The book edition will be concluded with a supplemental index of names. After the publication of one volume a year over the past five years (Vol. 1: A-F 2002, Vol. 2: G-Kl 2003, Vol. 3: Km-N 2004, Vol. 4: O-Sch 2005, Vol. 5: Sch-Z 2006), it is now planned to continuously expand the series in an online version (with the exception of keywords and basic information, available for a fee at www.musiklexikon.ac.at) that will include further keywords and names, bibliographic and technical additions, as well as comprehensive appendices.
