This work examines the historical genealogy of Islamic education tradi-tion, particularly the Madrasah (Islamic School) and the Pesantren (Traditional Islamic Boarding School), which has contributed to the development of Indonesian Islamic education. The argument of the study is the existing values of the Islamic tradition, particularly evident in the Madrasah schools, provide a valuable basis for further develo-ping and reconstructing an effective Islamic education system in Indo-nesia. By drawing in an analytic way a historically based description of the social and political circumstances surrounding Indonesian Islamic education; the study discusses some significant issues concerning on the influence of Islamic tradition, the influence of Dutch colonial contribution, and the issue of Islam and medernity. Also, this study examines the religious base, knowledge base, structural form, and the pedagogical approach of Indonesian Islamic education, all of which are important to the development of a modern form of Islamic edu-cation in Indonesia.
