The Social Question and Adult Education- La question sociale et l'education des adultes: European Perspectives in the 19 th and 20 th Centuries- Perspectives europeennes, XIX e - XX e siecles

The abundant historical research literature on modernisation processes, social change and adult education in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries clearly demonstrates the diverse formulations throughout Europe of the ‘social question’ as one of the key issues in the development and organisation of adult education. Interpretations of the ‘social question’ and adult learning were negotiated in relation to contemporary economic, political, social and cultural realities. Economic, political, social and cultural changes associated with modernisation processes throughout Europe all impacted upon thinking and action with regard to the organisation of adult education for the ‘popular’ or ‘working’ classes.
Une abondante litterature europeenne sur l'histoire du processus de modernisation, du changement social et de l'education et la formation des adultes au XIXe et XXe siecles, montre clairement que les differentes declinaisons de la question sociale a travers l'Europe constituent un enjeu majeur du developpement et de l'organisation de l'education et de la formation des adultes. Differentes interpretations de la question sociale et de l'acces au savoir des adultes ont ete elaborees en fonction des realites economiques, politiques, sociales et culturelles contemporaines. Les changements economiques, politiques, sociaux et culturels, ainsi que le processus d'industrialisation partout en Europe ont eu un impact sur les idees et sur le developpement d'actions d'education du
peuple
ou des classes
laborieuses .
