Next to speech and writing, symbols offer an important as well as historically and culturally diversified means of communication. Symbols can be found in textual imagery, but also in paintings, printed images, emblems, heraldic images, and, on a more complex level, in tableaux vivants and in the gestures, homages and courtesies of formalised royal and princely demeanour, usually displayed on special occasions when the communication between the rulers and their people, through the symbols of rulership, has acquired maximum political and social momentum. The forms of symbolic communication dealt with in the present collection of essays therefore rely on determinate signification by means of convention rather than on private symbols. This collection highlights a limited number of themes relative to late medieval and early modern culture with a special focus on the symbols of rulership. Der Tagungsband behandelt ein Thema, das dem vermehrten Interesse der Mittelalter- und Fruhneuzeitforschung an Formen der Kommunikation insofern Rechnung tragt, als er aus der Gesamtheit dieser Formen die symbolische Kommunikation herausgreift, wie sie besonders durch den Munsteraner Sonderforschungsbereich 496 Symbolische Kommunikation und gesellschaftliche Wertesysteme vom Mittelalter bis zur Franzosischen Revolution seit 2001 untersucht wird. Der Fokus der Beitrage liegt auf drei Feldern, die im Kontext des Wandels vom Mittelalter zur Fruhen Neuzeit besonders wichtig erscheinen: den Formen und Mitteln symbolischer Kommunikation im allgemeinen, dem - im Hinblick auf diese besonders viel versprechenden, den medialen Wandel sehr deutlich anzeigenden - Feld des Herrscheradventus und schliesslich den Medien hofischer Symbolik , ist der Hof doch in diesem Zeitraum (135-1650) noch immer der zentrale Ort fur Sicherung und Entfaltung der Memoria.
