Chateaubriand’s Les Aventures du Dernier Abencerage: Past and Present

Most scholarship dealing with the Abencerage, from 1926 until the 1970’s, dealt with a detailed investigation of its genesis. As a consequence, very little work was carried out of a thematic, structural or semiotic nature. This study is the first full-length study of the Abencerage in English. The first part constitutes a synthesis and overview of all of the research which has been carried out on the history of the Abencerage, providing a useful context for literary analysis. The second part offers literary interpretations of this beautifully crafted work of fiction.
