Since the third century the synod has been known as a form of assembly and as a collegial element of the ecclesiastical constitution. In the later Middle Ages the synodal system revived and was constituent in the following church reform. The legislation which resolved out of the provincial or diocesan synods shows the problems of the particular province and also enlightens the local churches actual circumstances during the examined period. The dioceses on the territories of contemporary Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland and several medieval provinces as well as some dioceses are used as examples.
