Die Existenz wortinterner Sprachwechsel wurde bisher in der Linguistik weitgehend verneint. Diese Einschatzung wurde dadurch begunstigt, dass zumeist europaische Sprachpaare betrachtet wurden. Fanta Christiane Heine analysiert in ihrem Buch wortinterne Sprachwechsel zwischen einer europaischen Sprache und aussereuropaischen Sprachen bzw. indoeuropaischen und Kongo-Niger-Sprachen unter besonderer Berucksichtigung morphologischer Aspekte. In ihrer Studie kommt sie zu dem Schluss, dass es wortinterne Sprachwechsel gibt, welche regelgerecht sind.
