English summary: On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the reopening of the Egyptian Museum of the University of Leipzig, Elke Blumenthal, its longtime director, tells the story of the museum’s eventful history following its closure after the bombing raids of 1943, the years of the GDR, the time of the Wende and the period up to the present day. Going beyond the boundaries of the discipline, the history of the collection reflects key political events and developments as well as demonstrating the special significance of the museum as a lifeline and gateway to the world during the years of the East German regime. Based on her personal memories, Blumenthal’s account expands upon existing works on the history of the museum, with the inclusion of numerous snapshots of everyday life, not to mention the diverse nuances of subjective experience. The work is completed by a range of formerly unpublished photographs, a detailed register of persons, bibliographical references, contemporary documents and Blumenthal’s own personal memories of the fall of the Wall on November 9th.
