English summary: Old Akkadian is one of the oldest Semitic languages for which verified long text documents still exist. These documents constitute important source material, not only for assyriologists and semitists, but also for researchers from associated disciplines. So far, there has been no adequate tool available for accessing this difficult and disparate field. Francis Breyer’s Altakkadisches Elementarbuch, the elementary handbook of Old Akkadian, now provides the first comprehensive insight into Old Akkadian language, its cuneiform script and its historical background. Alongside an introduction to the history of research and source material as well as to the history of speech and writing of early Assyro-Babylonian, the volume conveys a basic knowledge of Old Akkadian by means of a compact grammar, glossaries and lists of characters. These can be used in the subsequent exercises. The texts are presented in cuneiform script, transliteration, transcription and in translation and are complemented by a commentary of both language and content. Dedicatory inscriptions, royal inscriptions, letters and commercial documents (including in particular the ManiAtuAu obelisk) are presented in their respective contexts and are explained and supplemented by inscriptions from neighboring cultures. This mixture of chrestomathy, teaching grammar and annotated reader is aimed mainly at students of Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Semitic Studies and Theology, but also at historians, archaeologists and linguists who are interested in gaining access to a formative phase of Ancient Near Eastern history and its source material.
