With this commentary Thomas GArtner presents the third and final volume on a oeJohannisa Coripps. The monograph Studies in the Structure and Historical Material of Corippusa ™ a oeJohannisa, published in 2008, is now followed by both the critial edition (UaLG 91) and this commentary presenting the historical and poetical sources for Corippsa ™ epic on the deeds of the Byzantine general Johannes Troglita. A comparison with the omnipresent literary prototypes serves to provide as sound as possible a justification of the text reconstructed in the critical edition. At the same time it demonstrates the range of literature, from archaic Latin to Christian Late Antiquity, with which the author, who is rightly regarded as the last of the Latin epic poets, was familiar.
