The essays collected in this volume were selected from papers presented at a conference organized at the National University of Ireland, Galway in April 2004, on the subject of deceptive relationships in French and Francophone literature and visual culture. The collection examines specific representations and enactments of deception in French art and literature from the Middle Ages to the present. Divided into three thematic sections, the book begins by focusing on the role of distortion in art and literature, goes on to tackle the representation and practice of manipulation in certain works, and finally turns to the function of substitution in the construction and reception of artful deceptions.

Les articles qui figurent dans ce recueil sont tires des communications presentees lors d'un colloque organise a l'Universite nationale d'Irlande a Galway en avril 2004, sur le theme de la tromperie dans la litterature et la culture visuelle francaises ou francophones. Le recueil se penche sur de nombreuses representations et pratiques particulieres de la mystification depuis le Moyen Age jusqu'a nos jours. Divise en trois sections thematiques, le livre commence par des analyses du statut de la deformation dans l'art et la litterature, pour aborder ensuite la maniere dont la manipulation est mise en oeuvre dans et par certaines oeuvres. Enfin il est question du fonctionnement de la substitution dans la construction et la reception des supercheries.
