C'est l'histoire de Maurice, poilu de la guerre de 14-18 qui laisse ses pieces d'identite sur le corps d(un soldat tombe au combat a cote de lui. Il passe donc pour mort et laisse une jeune veuve, inconsolable. Dans la deuxieme partie du roman nous assistons a la reapparition de Maurice, des annees apres la fin de la guerre.
