English summary: The rise of intolerance in the Roman Empire of the 3rd to 6th centuries is not a surprising phenomenon. It was the consequence of a series of long-term and interdependent developments. This work incorporates and examines, within a narrative framework, the various aspects of proselytism and persecution, the centralization of secular power and its increasingly intimate ties with religion, doctrinal orthodoxy and heresy, the internal and external polemic of scriptuary communities, subtle or brutal censorship, and, lastly, the new history - namely the rewriting of universal history in religious terms. As a result of being interlinked, these developments had a dialectic, if not causal, relationship with what was at first an incidental, and later an endemic, spread of intolerance (accompanied by its more concrete manifestation, violence) in the Roman Empire.All of these phenomena, triggered in a pluralist society by the advent of an ever-growing number of men and women claiming to have a monopoly on theological truth and determined to spread this truth through a missionary approach, are closely correlated and formed the basis of a new societal model - that of the religious community. Within the isolated era recently dubbed Late Antiquity, a society which had been orchestrated to revolve around Man was replaced by one dedicated to the greatest glory of God. Une serie de developpements interdependants, qui s'inscrivent dans la longue duree, en sont a l'origine. Le present ouvrage integre et analyse dans un schema narratif les thematiques du proselytisme et de la persecution; de la centralisation du pouvoir seculaire et de son alliance de plus en plus intime avec le domaine religieux; de l'orthodoxie doctrinale et de l'heresie; de la polemique interne et externe des communautes scripturaires; de la censure subtile ou brutale et, finalement, de la nouvelle histoire, c'est-a-dire de la reecriture de l'histoire universelle en termes religieux. Imbriques les uns dans les autres, ces developpements ont une relation sinon causale, au moins dialectique, avec la presence, d'abord incidente, puis endemique, de l'intolerance (avec son corollaire plus concret de la violence) dans l'Empire romain.Tous ces phenomenes, declenches dans une societe pluraliste par l'arrivee d'un nombre toujours croissant d'hommes et de femmes revendiquant le monopole de la verite theologique et resolus a repandre cette verite par une demarche missionnaire, sont fortement correles et se trouvent a la base d'un nouveau modele societal - celui de la communaute religieuse. Dans le vase clos qu'on a pris depuis peu l'habitude de nommer l’ Antiquite tardive, s'effectue le passage d'une societe organisee a la mesure de l'Homme a une autre batie pour la plus grande gloire de Dieu.
