Marlys Harper vividly narrates her formative years in the 1950s and 60s in an ultra-religious, working-class family as the eldest of five children. In Part One, "Roots," she recalls memories in everyday detail involving her family and weaves in discoveries she learned later in life about her ancestors. Her views, fashioned by her upbringing, are broadened when she leaves home and gains independence, but her life's vision is still undefined.

With the arrival of Boeing's 747, Marlys becomes a Pan American stewardess, later progressing to the position of purser. In Part Two, "Routes," she relates her experiences exploring different countries and cultures. Her career, filled with endless opportunities, takes an unanticipated turn, compelling her to adapt to a mundane job. Seeking a new beginning, she relocates to Acapulco, Mexico.

Part Three, "Roads Taken," describes how Marlys embraces a simpler lifestyle, gains new perspectives, and overcomes numerous challenges in Acapulco. She meets Gilberto, a charismatic guide for her integration into the local culture. Their relationship lasts several years and eventually leads to the birth of their daughter. Marlys makes the tough decision to return to the US with her infant daughter and begin to travel on their own road.

Marlys Harper's inner journey toward liberation transforms her from customary submission to empowered independence. We are reminded that our journeys are similar to the stages of metamorphosis a butterfly evolves through until it finally sheds its cocoon. Through hope, personal growth, and resilience, we finally discover our wings.
