Rupert, a rescued three-legged Chihuahua, sneaks out of his yard to visit his good friend Ally Gator whose babies should be about ready to hatch. He trots on his three legs, visiting friends along the way on Front Street in Georgetown, South Carolina. He has people friends and bird friends and squirrel friends and rooster friends, but he is on a mission to protect his best friend's nest from raccoons and snakes and bobcats. Despite missing one leg, Rupert is successful in helping Ally move her new babies from the nest to the water, and in the process, he conquers his fear of the boardwalk and the river beneath it. And he gets home safely before dinner!
