The atmosphere is the part of Earth that contains the air we breathe. It extends 60 miles (97 km) above the surface of Earth and is made up of different gas molecules. (Molecules and atoms are defined.) Most of the atmosphere is made up of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor gases. When you breathe, all the gases in the air go into your lungs. Your body uses the oxygen, and the other gases just go in and out of your lungs. Special cells in the lungs take oxygen out of the air so the body can use it to make energy. (Cells are defined.) All types of weather take place in the atmosphere. Weather patterns change over time and from place to place in the world. Climate refers to the usual weather patterns in a particular area.
Pronunciation guide. 24 pages filled with engaging, colorful illustrations. Reading Level 1-3, Interest Level 2-5.
