Scholar William Lane states that, "Mark is recognized by a wide spectrum of scholars as the first of the Gospels to be written down" (p. xvi). It has the benchmarks of an eye-witness account, with its clear picture of the actions of Yeshua, including his private instructions to his disciples, and its concrete portrayal of life in the land of Israel and among the Jewish people.
