Sulien is a warlock with a secret. He has the power provided through the source to raise the dead. Necromancy is forbidden in Marsay. Narrowly escaping death, Sulien and his assistant, Leif, travel to the middle realms in search of the desolate land. A home where they can create life from death. A place shown to them in a vision.

The desolate land is harsh, with a river of blood snaking through the fine sands and caked earth of the realm. It isn't survivable for a warlock, or any creature. The magic of the middle realms is weak. Sulien and Leif must overcome many challenges, each one darker and more foreboding than the last. Bloodthirsty creatures with incredible speed and a one-track mind aren't the life they hoped to make.
