Seeing someone experiencing a medical emergency can be frightening, no matter what age you are. But it doesn’t have to be if you know what’s happening and what to do. As an Advanced EMT and volunteer firefighter, I’ve seen plenty of medical emergencies. I’ve also seen where young children were the ones that stepped up as the hero. This book is designed for children ages 8-10 but is beneficial for all ages.

The I Can Be a Hero series is designed to help your child learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of medical emergencies, know what to do to help, and when you need to call 911. Each book in the series covers a different medical situation.

In this book, six-year-old Hunter will help you will learn about diabetes and diabetic emergencies.

It’s inspired by a true story that happened between my then 6-yr-old son and my dad. Hunter will explain how low or high blood sugar can affect a person and what you or your child can do to help someone who is experiencing low blood sugar. Your child will also learn what to tell a 911 operator if he or she should have to call for help.

Keywords are in bold and can be found in the glossary at the end. There is also additional reading resource links at the end of the book for further reading about diabetes.

Hunter is now sixteen years old and still showing a helpful spirit by volunteering with me at the fire department as an explorer.

Reaching out today to inspire the world’s first responders of tomorrow.
