Determined to discover his father's fate, Michael builds a one-man submarine. Following a map his father left behind, he discovers Atlantis, the air-filled cavern world of the merfolk. These anthropomorphic amphibians are a race descended from colonists from another planet who have created all life on Earth, a biosphere project. Michael discovers that the merfolk are on the verge of wiping out humanity due to our contributing to the destruction of the planet through climate change. He falls in love with Kaphia, a cute mermaid, as they strive to rescue Michael's father and find a method to reverse climate change.
