I grew up in the ‘30s and '40s in an undeveloped suburb outside of Birmingham, Alabama. I was privileged to be born into a Coca-Cola family and had all the advantages, but my parents never coddled me and I was not over-protected. I was all boy–passionate about the woods, BB guns, firecrackers, bike riding and touch football, all of which played into the over-arching theme of my boyhood: having fun with my friends! I had a major talent for adventure and fun, and my parents gave me the freedom to develop this talent to the fullest. Fun! A Boyhood memorializes what was an extraordinarily joyful time in my life, along with some of the people and dogs who gave me so much love and friendship. Although this memoir is not great literature, I recommend it to anyone who wants to remember–or to younger people who want to know–whatit was like growing up in a simpler time. This is how it was…back then.
