January 1865
The southern Confederacy clings perilously to existence after four years of bloody combat with the Union armies. The northern army, under Union General Ulysses S Grant, has Confederate forces, under General Robert E Lee, pinned to the trenches of Petersburg in Virginia.
The army of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman has fought its way through Tennessee and has marched to the sea through Georgia to Savannah and now is poised to cross the river into South Carolina, the last untouched bastion of the Confederacy, and stab northward at the unprotected underbelly of the South.
Confederate forces are trying to form a defensive front as white southerners, sick of four years of suffering still cling to the hope of victory.
Hundreds of thousands of blacks, who have suffered their entire lives as slaves, forever hoping for the day of Jubilee, wonder now if that day of freedom from bondage is finally near at hand or is it merely another pipe dream that will soon evaporate.
As air rises through honey, the Union Army rises northward through South Carolina and with it rises the potential for the end of the war and freedom from slavery.
Air in the Honey is the story of four young people, two slaves, Miela and Ezekiel, Luke, a Union soldier, and Connor, a Confederate soldier, and how their hopes and lives interconnect.
