Godfried Danneels, was born 4 June 1933, holds a licencieate degree in Philosophy from the Catholic University of Louvain and a Doctor of Theology from the Gregorian University of Rome. He was ordained a priest on 17 August 1957 for the diocese of Bruges, BISHOP. He was appointed Bishop of Antwerp on 4 November 1977 and Consecrated on 18 December the same year. Two years later, on 19 December 1979, he became Archbishop of Malines-Bruxelles and Primate of Belgium. On 18 January 2010, having exceeded the age limit, his resignation was accepted by Benedict XVI. CARDINAL. He was created cardinal during the consistory of 2 February 1983 with the title of cardinal-priest of St Anastasia (S Anastasia). He participated in the conclaves of 2005 and 2013 which respectively elected Popes Benedict XVI and Francis.
