This booklet was originally produced on the 50th anniversary year of the D Day landings which took place on 6th June, 1944, with troops from the Plymouth area landing on Utah beach on the Cherbourg peninsula. There were five landing areas code named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. The first two were undertaken by American forces based in the West Country and up to Poole in Dorset, the others by British and Commonwealth troops based around the Southampton area and up to Newhaven. All these troops were supported by considerable air cover and naval power from units stationed in various parts of Great Britain.
