A story of individual loss, of the suffering inflicted by war, and of how a woman learns to survive both. It is 1918. The war that has been ravaging Europe is nearly over, and eight-year-old Kitty can look forward to growing up in a world where peace will be restored. The kindliness of the Sussex countryside, her well-to-do parents and, above all, her adored brother offer her all the safety and happiness she needs to begin the work of becoming an accomplished young lady. But beneath the elegant veneer of her family’s life a tragedy of a different kind is about to change the course of her childhood for ever. We follow Kitty as she finds her way out of a home life shattered by loss and betrayal to a new beginning alongside a man she loves.
