Have you switched on your "listening ears"?

Let's listen together.

Let's talk about what we hear.

Let's go for a sound walk!

Join two adorable siblings on their sound exploration - from quiet to loud, swishing to sweeping, roaring, crashing, crying and sleeping...

For young children with (and without) hearing loss, this relatable and engaging story intertwines vibrant sounds from home, garden and beyond with beautiful and humorous illustrations. Encouraging playful interaction between reader and listener, it presents a fun (sometimes raucous!) way to support the development of listening and language through a celebration of the sounds we hear all around us every day.

The book offers the opportunity to carry out a quick Ling Sounds check as you read, as the six sounds are incorporated in the rhyming narrative.

The book ends with a recap of the many different sounds encountered in the story, and 7 top tips for reading the book for with your child, compiled by the author who has ten years' experience as a Teacher of the Deaf.

"Let's Go For A Sound Walk" features a deaf main character with cochlear implants, but will equally resonate with those who wear hearing aids or have typical hearing. A donation from every sale will be made by the author to GB Deaf Football, to help keep the team playing.

About the author:

Karen Hardwicke is first and foremost the parent of a deaf child. She has also worked for over ten years as a Teacher of the Deaf. Her most memorable teaching experiences involved developing the listening skills of the deaf children she taught in nursery. One of her favourite ways to nurture listening and language was through "sound walks" in and around the school setting - simple, everyday adventures exploring the world through sound. This story is a celebration of those times...

"Let's Go For A Sound Walk" is the sixth book Karen has published with AVID Language.

About the illustrator:

Lucy Rogers is a deaf illustrator who has worked on over 15 books in the 5 years since she graduated from Falmouth University with a degree in illustration. Growing up in rural North Devon and attending a mainstream school, Lucy lacked opportunities to meet other deaf peers. At school, she discovered her love for books and the worlds they contained for her to explore. Later on, as she started thinking more about book illustrations, she realised they contained no deaf characters like her! She wanted to help put this right so, since graduating, she has worked hard to raise deaf awareness and promote positive deaf representation so that all deaf kids can find themselves in the books they read... because all children deserve to feel a connection to their books.
