Localised Prostate Cancer: Recent Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment

Prostate cancer remains a major cause of death in men in most Western countries. There have been a number of important advances in understanding the biology of prostate cancer, its early detection and the development of therapies for its treatment. Which type of therapy should be used and whether hormonal deprivation should start prior to radical medical prostatectomy remian controversial. Similiarly, the ability to detect Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) in serum as a marker of prostate cancer has stimulated a debate about the ethics and economics of this diagnostic test.
