The 10 Rules of Rock and Roll: Collected Music Writings / 2005-09

Robert Forster

This is a roller-coaster ride through the history and present of popular music - from The Monkees, The Rolling Stones, Nana Mouskouri and Neil Diamond to Cat Power, Antony and the Johnsons, Franz Ferdinand and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and covering such Australian mainstays as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Mark Seymour, Paul Kelly and theCountdown spectacular.

Robert Forster was a Go-Between and now has an acclaimed solo career. But in recent times he has established himself as one of the fi nest music critics in the business. This book gathers that writing into an entertaining whole and also includes several new pieces- Forster outlines the 10 Rules of Rock and Roll, reflects on the influence of The Velvet Underground and movingly remembers his partner in The Go-Betweens, Grant McLennan.

Review

The 10 Rules of Rock and Rollis a retrospective journey intopopular music: a musicalendoscopy which coversalmost the whole gamut ofthe art and its genres. Fromthe juvenescent to thegeriatric; from the coy to thecamp; from Delta Goodrem and KaseyChambers, to ageing rockers like AC/DC.This is a mélange of very tasteful reviews onalbums, books, concerts and writings. As onemight expect, Dylan features highly as areference point throughout the work.

Forsteris an absolutely fabulous writer. He knowshis music and how to critique it withoutdenigrating the artist or their work. Hewrites from the heart and for everyone. Ifyou’re not into Diamond or Campbell, there’s always Cohen or Mouskouri. Artistswho, despite their age, are prepared to get upon stage and affirm their place amidst thepantheon of musicians. There’s plenty tochoose from this smorgasbord of talent. Onething is certain however – age does notdefine talent. In fact, the older the better.
