Haciendas, Hammocks and Hurricanes

How about buying a house in Mexico and going to live there? What is it really like? This is the story of our house in Merida, the charming but crumbling colonial city in Mexico’s Yucatan. We fall in love with La Casa del Abogado over the internet, buy it after one viewing and take a year off work to live there. Our plan is to do renovations and run a guest house to make ends meet. But the best laid plans have a habit of blowing away - this is the worst year on record for hurricanes. And we are amateurs in a place full of wonderful boutique hotels in haciendas that have been painstakingly restored. Like the hurricanes this season, our plans go through the entire alphabet but along the way we find out what it’s really like to live in this wonderful tropical city that time seems to have forgotten. Do we regret it? No way! In fact this is only the start.
