This is arguably the most widely-distibuted and durable Regimental history ever produced. Its success owes as much to the dash and brilliance of the actions decribed; as to the literary skill of the author ( although Younghusband also wrote a well-received history of the Tower of London). First formed in 1846, at the instigation of Sir Henry Lawrence, the hero subsequently killed leading the defence of Lucknow in the Indian Mutiny; the Regiment fought in almost every Indian campaign. It won heroic honours in the suppression of the Mutiny; and took part in the Afghan War.
